Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Co

Arapahoe basin ski resortThe Arapahoe Basin Ski area or the ‘A-basin’ is a skiing and snowboarding haven, cradled in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It is situated at a height of 13,050 feet (3977m); the ski resort opens early in mid-October and stays open till July. The Arapahoe Basin area has difficult and advanced terrain for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

Arapahoe basin ski area Dillon has 3 distinct lodges, each offering the best of cuisine and also has a ski school for learners.  It was started by Max and Edna Dercum in the 1940’s along with the Ski Tip Lodge. In 2006-2007, the Arapahoe Basin Ski Resort became the first resort to open in the US with a single lift, run and terrain park. Since then it holds the record for the earliest opening date of a ski area in history.

Aspen Highlands Ski Resort, CO

aspen highlands ski resortAspen Highlands Ski area has been a favorite amongst the locals for over 50 yrs and is located in Pitkin County, Colorado. The Ski Resort was established in 1946 by Walter Paepcke and is operated by the Aspen Skiing Company as part of the Aspen Snowmass Complex.

The ski area is famous for the Highland bowl which opened in 2002, and is known for its intense terrains. Aspen Highlands Bowl is at an elevation of 12,392 feet.  It has less crowded trails, some of the most challenging terrains and gives a panoramic view of the mountains.

Aspen Highlands’ elevation is 11,675 ft/3,559 m, it consists of 118 trails. The Aspen Highlands Highland bowl has been an integral part of the Ski area since 2002.

Trails are categorized into easy, difficult, very difficult and expert terrain. Season begins in December 11th and stretches up to April 24th. The Maroon Bells can be beautifully seen from its summit.

It has two restaurants- Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro and Merry-Go-Round. The ski resort also provides lodging for different budgets. Aspen Highlands was opened in 1958 and is thronged by locals and outsiders. Aspen Highlands’ opening day is on December 11th; Aspen Highlands’ closing day is April 24th.

9th Annual High Plains Snow Goose Festival, Lamar, Colorado

The Annual High Plains Snow Goose Festival is back celebrating its 9th anniversary this year. The festival would start from 24th February 2011 and go on till 27th February 2011. Jeffrey Gordon, the new President of American Birding Association, is the keynote speaker this year. Apart from being a bird guide, he’s also a naturalist.

Cherish the view of milky white and shiny slate-grey flocks of snow geese at flying back to their homeland in Canadian Arctic and resting for a while mid-way at Lamar in south-east Colorado.

These migratory species of birds halt in Lamar on their way back from their migration in spring season. They perch near the various lakes of the plain land and nourish on the adjoining patches of lush.
