Broadmoor Colorado Springs History
The Broadmoor Hotel started operating in the year 1891 as a small hotel with casino. The present huge and lavish Broadmoor resort was initiated by Spencer Penrose and Charles L. Tutt in the year 1918. During the early 20th century The Broadmoor was very popular among the elite class gusts, mainly due to its location and the panorama around it.
The Broadmoor Hotel was previously the Broadmoor World Arena site, an ice arena where World Figure Skating Championships were held for five times between the years 1957 and 1975. The rink of the arena was brought down to make a new wing of The Broadmoor Hotel in the year 1994. Inside the hotel, there is a memorial in honor of the US team Broodmoor skaters, who were killed in a flight crash in 1961.
The Broadmoor operated a small skiing area just beneath the Cheyenne Mountain between 1940 and 1980, but due to less snowfall and inadequate fund the facility had to be discontinued.
