Most popular religion among Coloradans is, Catholicism, which is now becoming more with the Latino immigrants. Similar to other Western states, Colorado has the huge percentage of religiously unaffiliated residents. As per the Survey conducted by American Religious Identification in the year 2001, Colorado’s population is categorised by the following religious groups:

A latest study says, Colorado has the least rate of obesity when comparing to any other state in the USA. By the year 2007, medically obesed people in Colorado was 17.6% which is lowest in the nation, but the percentage rose from 16.9% in 2004.

Speaking about the wealth of the state, the total state product in the year 2006, was estimated at $230 Billion, by the BEA (Bureau of Economic Analysis). In the year 2003, per capita personal income was $34,561 which helped Colorado to rank eighth in the USA. Apart from the research and technology industries, the state’s economy is based on other industries such as transportation equipment, food processing, chemical products, machinery, minerals (mainly molybdenum and gold) and tourism. The state is producing the largest quantity of beer than any other in the nation.

Regardless to the income level, Colorado has a flat rate of 4.63% income tax and the sales tax is 2.9% on all retail sales.

The local climate is highly affected by the Mountains and surroundings. As we know, rise in elevation results in temperature decrease and increase in precipitation. A major climatic division in the State occurs between the Plains on the East and Rocky Mountains on the West.

The uniformity of the weather is relatively low in the West of the foothills and plains. Based on the topography of this area, a few miles away from the plains can feel totally different weather. Since thunderstorms are highly common in Colorado, it holds the record for most number of deaths because of lightning in the USA. Similar to the thunderstorms, floods are also common in the Colorado, especially in the plains. Not only due to thunderstorms, but also because of heavy snowfall in the mountain regions followed by warm, that returns as floods.

A Trip To The Denver Zoo

Denver ZooWhen paying a visit to Colorado, don’t forget to spend some time in Denver Zoo. This is one of the attractive tourist spots within the city. Besides, most of the Colorado residents spend their sunny day here, at Denver Zoo. This zoo is home for more than 4000 animals of over 750 different species. It is a home for many endangered and rare animals namely the Western Lowland Gorilla, the Komodo Dragon and endangered cheetahs.

The animals in this zoo are divided in various exhibits which result in the recreation of their natural environment. African Savannah and Bear Mountain are two exhibits. This zoo was built in the year 1918, and was the firstexhibit zoon in the US. Also, the country’s first natural gas powered train is being operated here. You can go for a ride, by paying $1 for the ticket. Apart from the things mentioned above, there are lot more things at the zoo, that will add some more pleasure.

History of Colorado

Colorado HistoryBefore Europeans settle down in Colorado, Native American tribes inhabited the state. Apache, who falls under these American tribes, who inhabited eastern plains in 18th century. Later, they migrated towards Arizona, Texas and New Mexico. However, they relocated to Colordao in 1860s. In addition to that, a number of valleys were inhabited by the Shoshoni. The Yampa River Valley, which is located in the Northern part of the state, was also inhabited by them till late 19th century.

The very first Europeans to arrive in Colorado were French, Spanish and American fur traders, explorers and trappers. By the year 1858, gold was discovered in Colorado. When this news reached the East, huge number of settlers arrived to Colorado in the year 1859. And then, Colorado was organized as a United States territory on 28th February, 1861. Colorado was announced as 38th state of the US on 1876.

In 1976, Denver won the Winter Olympics award. But, Colorado prohibited to use public funds to support the games. So, the games were relocated to Innsbruck, Austria.

Denver voted one of the best cities in America to have a baby

Denver BabyA survey conducted by Fit Pregnancy magazine analyzed all the cities in the US in regards to pregnancy and the cities’ affordability, maternal and infant health risk, breastfeeding, birthing options, stroller friendliness, fertility laws/resources, access to hospitals/Doctors, childcare and safety. So what makes Denver one of the best cities? Here are a few highlights of the survey:
* Low incidence of Cesarean section, among the lowest in the survey * Air quality which had been linked to childhood asthma and fertility rates, among other things is better in Denver.

* 86% of Denver mothers attempt breastfeeding. That’s the 8th highest percentage of any city in the survey.

* 10.1% of births statewide are attended by midwives, compared to a national average of 7.3 percent.

* Denver has 61 midwives for every 1,000 births, the 9th highest in the survey.

* With one acre of parkland for every 29 residents, there’s 75 percent more public park space than average here, relative to population.

* Denver has 8.0 NICU facilities per 10,000 births, 2nd highest in the survey. The average city in the survey has 3.4 NICU facilities per 10,000 live births.

* State laws require stringent background checks for day-care workers.

* There are 8.5 licensed day care centers for every 1,000 children under 4 years. The average city in the survey has 5.9.

* Colorado devotes more money relative to population than most states to child car-seat-check stations.

4. Dynasty - This series was about the Carringtons who were a wealthy family living in Denver.

3. Stargate SG1 - This has to be one of my favorite shows. It is about an archeological discovery of a Ring that can transport you anywhere in the Universe where there is another Ring.

2. Mork and Mindy - This was a spin off of Happy days. It was about Mork (an alien) and Mindy (a human) living in Boulder.

1. South Park - This is a long running animated series with around 167 shows with no sign of slowing down. South Park is based in a fictional town South Park, Colorado.

Denver Kids, Inc.

Denver Kids, Inc.Denver Kids, Inc. (DKI) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1993 with over 90 years of collective history. DKI provides long-term preventive counseling to male and female students in Denver Public Schools who are identified by school personnel as being at-risk, needing support and guidance beyond what is provided in school.Each student is guided by a DKI counselor who provides one-to-one academic and personal counseling to address a variety of needs for each student, on an individual basis.

DKI students are also matched on a one-to-one basis with a Mentor from the community who commits his or her time and energy to serve as a Mentor Friend for a year, or more. The Mentor Friend receives training and guidance to serve as a positive, adult role model in the student’s life. Each year, Mentors contribute over 30,000 hours to DKI.

DKI is an affiliate of Denver Public Schools, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Denver, the Zonta Club of Denver and Denver Active 20-30. These organizations provide funding for program support and representation from the community.

Individuals who share a common concern for youth and support the goals of DKI compose the Board of Directors. The majority consists of members of DKI’s sponsoring organizations and the remaining members-at-large represent various segments of the community.
